We are a holistic health center, which means we focus on all parts of well-being. Last week, we talked about how massage and Reiki can support mental health. This week, I’d like to talk a little bit about how we can support your physical health.
I don’t know about you, but when I start feeling stressed, the first place I feel it is not in my mental or emotional state, but in my body. I feel tired and achy, like my bones can’t support my weight and my muscles can’t do another thing.
That mind-body connection is real. Perhaps it’s easy to see how your body affects your mind — being in chronic pain adversely affects both your emotions and your cognition. But your mind also affects your body and its ability to handle the stresses of day-to-day life.
This is where massage and Reiki come in. Relaxation-based therapies can have a profound impact on your body, even when you’re thinking, “Well, but this isn’t deep work.” Lighter, gentler work can be enormously beneficial to your body. If stress is a component of your physical troubles, this might be a great way to alleviate your pain.
I haven’t even begun to talk about how massage can help you physically. I see a number of athletes who seek regular massage to lengthen their muscles, which helps them train better. They also seek massage to loosen muscles that have become tight through overuse. If you’re starting a new exercise program with the new year (as many are), this is a great time to make massage part of your regular routine!
