Welcome to the Chakra series! Each week, we’re going to go in depth with explanations about each chakra and what it does. Today, though, we’re going to start with the basics:
Here is the question I can feel you asking me: What is a chakra?
My initial answer is going to be with a question (sorry, I know that’s annoying, but I’ll get to the point, I promise). Have you ever played with the energy field that surrounds you? Have you ever slowly put your hands together and realized that, when they were a few inches apart, you were aware that there was a pulse of energy there? (If you haven’t, go ahead and do that now. It’s fun and fascinating.)
This energy, this electromagnetic field, is concentrated in our bodies in seven major whirling areas that go up our torso in a relatively straight line. (There are also many more minor ones, which we will not discuss here.) Each one of these energy centers corresponds with different organ systems to keep us optimally healthy. Their cycling nature serves to exchange “bad” or “used” energy with good, fresh energy, much like your lungs. When these centers become blocked, we become vulnerable to disease, depression, and anxiety.
This is where Reiki comes in. This form of energy work helps us keep our chakras balanced and in good working order, which in turn helps us feel relaxed and at ease with ourselves and the frenetic pace of our lives around us.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll study each chakra in detail – what parts of our bodies and minds each one serves. And for the month of November, I do have a special on Reiki. Receive 10 percent off your 30- or 60-minute session. This is a great time, heading into the end-of-year craziness, to try this gentle, noninvasive, relaxing form of energy work. Be well, healthy and whole!
