We’re heading into a time of year when all sorts of viruses (also known commonly as “bugs” or “cooties”) are beginning to float around. Did you know that massage can be one of the tools in your toolkit to fight illnesses? It’s true!
One of the wonderful side effects of massage is that it stimulates your lymph system, which is one of your body’s primary ways to fight infection (either from bacteria or viruses). Your lymphatic system consists of :
lymph nodes – the collection points for lymph, kind of like a train switchyard;
lymph vessels, much like blood vessels; and
lymph, a clear-ish fluid filled with disease-fighting agents.
Have you ever had a cut or abrasion where you could see yellowish fluid seeping through? That’s lymph. Where there’s an injury or illness, lymph rushes in to heal.
Here’s the thing. Where the circulatory system has the heart to pump blood and move it through your body, the lymphatic system is entirely gravity-fed. There’s no pump to help lymph circulate through your body. Sometimes it gets stuck and has a hard time circulating.
That’s where massage comes in!
The motion of massage works to help lymph circulate through the body. That means your body becomes naturally more able to stave off disease.
(It also means that if you’re actively fighting a cold or virus, you will actually feel worse if you have massage. If this is you, stay home and rest. When you are feeling better, come in to help get your immune system back on track!)
