The honest truth? This massage changed me.
If you’re experiencing a clicking in your jaw, you’re not alone. The National Institutes of Health estimates that 10 million people in the United States have some form of TMD, or tempromandibular disorder.
Usually we hear this referred to as TMJ. Here’s the thing: We all have TMJ. The TMJ is your tempromandibular joint, and you have two of them if you have a jawbone. The jawbone, or mandible, connects to the temporal bone (which is one of your skull bones), hence the name. When things don’t work well with your jaw — when you have trouble opening your mouth fully, for example, or when you experience a clicking sensation — these are disorders of your tempromandibular joint. TMD. Medical terminology is fun!
Frequently, when you go to your dentist for jaw disorders, you get referred to an orthodontist for a night guard or for further examinations. This might absolutely be warranted. However, one possibility you might want to investigate is massage.
Many massage therapists are trained in TMJ massage. This can loosen the musculature that controls the opening and closing of your mouth. It requires intraoral work, in which the massage therapist wears gloves and works on the muscles in your mouth. It doesn’t take long — a TMJ massage can be done in about 15 minutes — but the results can be life-changing.
In 2014, I had an accident that left me with a torn ligament in my left jaw. By the time I experienced TMJ massage as a client, several years later, I hadn’t been able to open my mouth all the way since the accident. Afterwards, I could. What a profound and moving gift that was for me. I do stretches every day to maintain this flexibility but let me tell you, it was incredible.
