The Truth About Water

I always bring water to my clients after a massage. I’m not alone in this practice – most massage therapists do. But why?

Hydration is probably the most important thing you can do to take care of your body. Now, excuse me while I get a cup of water.

Aaahhh. Much better. As I was saying.

Every cell in your body runs on water. Every. Single. One. The discs between your vertebrae in your spine fill up with water while you sleep (the second-most important thing you can do for your body – more on that in another article), and that water supply in your discs becomes depleted throughout the day. All day, the cells of your body will beg, borrow and steal to get plenty of water. And they will get it – from your blood, your lymph, and, yes, the discs in your back. That’s why it’s so important to keep a healthy water supply running through your body. When you have a surplus of water, your cells have plenty from which to draw, and those other vital systems of your body stay replenished and able to function optimally.

Another thing water does is help flush unhealthy waste from your body. This waste is mostly the byproduct of normal cell function, but it also can include viruses and other pathogens in the body. Literally, you pee this stuff out. Plenty of water keeps your whole system flushed and cleaner and a little more able to fight off this disease.

So what does this have to do with massage? One reason why I remind you to drink plenty of water is because I’m interested in your total body health. Water helps you stay healthy. End of story.

But also, massage stirs up your lymph system and helps your lymphatic fluid flow to the lymph nodes (the centers that filter and clean the lymph). Have you ever had to pee right after a massage? This is because your lymph system has received an effective flush! And when that happens, you need – you guessed it – water to keep the good times and good health rolling in your body.

Be well, healthy, and whole!
